A talk in Maltese by veteran author, broadcaster and academic Joe Pirotta on ‘Independence Day: Dom Mintoff and George Borg Olivier, Debunking the Myths’ is being held on Wednesday at 7pm at the King’s Own Band Club, Valletta.

September 21, 1964, marked Malta’s first day as an independent nation. Pirotta reveals what went on behind the scenes, leading to that momentous day – the  interplay of personalities and events that led to the drawing of the curtains on Malta’s story as a colony.

During the talk he will refer to extensive research to describe the birth of the nation and answer questions such as what Archbishop Michael Gonzi really thought about Mintoff; what the political-religious struggle stemmed from; when Borg Olivier accepted to form a government; who had tried to influence the Independence referendum and why; and what the colonial powers thought of the Anglo-Maltese defence agreement?

The talk is being held by Capers (Creating A Positive Resourceful Environmental Society) Malta, a socially oriented NGO working in the arts, culture and eco fields.

To reserve a seat, e-mail info@capersmalta.org.mt. A €5 donation would be appreciated.
