A total 220 migrants are on their way to Pozzallo after they were rescued last night by two Italian coastguard patrol boats.

The coastguard said the boat carrying the migrants was spotted yesterday afternoon by an Icelandic aircraft, which forms part of the EU’s Triton Operation.

A French vessel, also part of the operation and two Italian patrol boats were sent on site.

The French unit provided initial assistance before the migrants were transferred to the patrol boats.
