A 23-year-old Australian man was rescued this afternoon after he fell into a narrow crevice in the rocks on the cliff known as It-taflija between Ghajn Tuffieha and Gnejna Bay.

The incident happened at about 3.45 p.m.

The man, who was injured, was given first aid by rescuers of the Civil Protection Department.

An AFM helicopter lowered a stretcher and the injured man was strapped to it and hoisted below the aircraft along with a rescuer.

The helicopter flew across the bay and gently lowered the stretcher at the Riviera hotel car park. The helicopter then also landed and took the patient and a doctor on board.

They were flown to the helicopter pad at St Luke's Hospital and conveyed to Mater Dei in an ambulance.
