The next seminar in the Work in Progress in the Social Studies series will be held on Wednesday between 6 and 7 p.m. at the Mediterranean Institute in Room 124. Dr Maya Unithaan, a reader in Anthropology at the University of Sussex, will discuss her paper on "Reproductive Rights and the Female Body in Northwest India".

In many countries development has been closely allied to what Foucault has called the exercise of biopower by the state in the management of its population.

In this seminar Dr Unithaan will consider the cultural responses to technologies which control conception in Rajastan to see how reproductive power is exercised by individuals, communities, and the state. She will examine how the recent discourse of 'human rights' fits with such population controlling exercises.
