Tomorrow's Times of Malta will carry a reprint of the original newspaper edition that reported the birth of the Republic of Malta on December 13, 1974.

The Times of Malta dated December 14, 1974, reports how the previous day, Sir Anthony Mamo was sworn in as the first President of the Republic at the Palace in Valletta. Outside, in the cold and rainy weather, people gathered to hear ministers and MPs promise to bear true faith and allegiance to the People, the Republic and the Constitution.

This historic edition is not only a celebration of Malta becoming a Republic, but it is also a trip down memory lane to discover life in Malta in 1974 – from the cost of property and rises in the price of crude oil to football star Pelé touted to become the new Santos president and what films were showing at the cinema back then.

The replica is being distributed with the Times of Malta tomorrow (as a separate copy), for free.
