It is disturbing that our Ministry of Justice and Home Affairs chooses to defend its 2002 decision to repatriate Eritreans by saying that torture was alleged in "only four of 220 cases" (your cover story, last Sunday). Surely even one instance of torture is one too many?

Even if the ministry's decision to repatriate those individuals had been taken in accordance with the letter of the law, in the current circumstances, compassion and regret would be more appropriate than the defensive stance the Ministry is currently taking.
