President George Abela recently bestowed the Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce's 2009 Gold Medal to actress Karmen Azzopardi in a ceremony held at the Casino Maltese, Valletta.

The award was given in recognition of Azzopardi's outstanding career on stage and TV.

In his brief introduction, Joseph Mifsud, president of the society, addressed the guests, among whom were actors and actresses who worked with Azzopardi during her career.

He explained the process of the council's decision on the 2009 Gold Medal Award.

The ceremony programme included vocal and piano interludes by soprano Rosabelle Bianchi, and pianists Joanne Camilleri and Kimberly Terribile. The event was presented by Charlotte Stafrace.
