Flavio Briatore has made a formal offer to Fernando Alonso to return to Renault.

The former double world champion split from McLaren on Friday and Briatore told Gaetta dello Sport that he had made an offer for the Spaniard to return to Renault on a long-term contract.

Renault are seen at leading the battle for Alonso's services although Red Bull are also said to be in the fight. Britatore could have a finger in both, since he manages Mark Webber, who currently drives for Red Bull.

Meanwhile Lewis Hamilton speaking in Stuttgart on Saturday mentioned Heikki Kovalainen, Nico Rosberg and Adrian Sutil as possible team-mates next year, replacing Alonso. He stressed he had no knowledge of who could be actually heading for Working but said the team needed good team players. He also placed the three drivers.

Kovalainen could be looking for a race seat if Alonso moves to Renault while Sutil's seat at Spyker still has to be confirmed by the new team owners. Rosberg is under contract with Williams.
