The many tributes to former ambassador Joseph Cassar testify to his success benefiting a whole nation.

His versatility and altruism led him also into politics within the Nationalist Party, where I came to know him.

In an article in Il-Mument a few months ago and, incidentally, shortly after my last few treasured moments in his presence, he wrote on the PN’s potential of once again being the source of ideas and ideals for the whole country.

He also stressed the need of more soul-searching within the party to strengthen its identity. While doing away with the “blame game”, the focus should be on what unites us and on persuasion within a democratic process, keeping in mind the PN’s achievements in education that contributed to a strong economy still advantageous to all today.

Quoting Max Ehrmann’s Desiderata in his memorial card reflects the values and ethics inspiring his daily life. He knew his exceptional intelligence was a gift from God and used it effectively in the interest of humanity while projecting an inner peace and love for the world and all its contrasts.

In an appreciation he wrote last January in memory of Alfred Zarb, he referred to him as a highly-respected, resourceful and accomplished Maltese diplomat and bridge builder. This can be equally applied to him.

In the funeral Mass I was struck by the legacy of faith, joy and freedom Cassar left to his family. One grandson convincingly said his nannu is now looking after him from heaven. Another grandson proudly mentioned his nannu as the person with whom he could discuss any imaginable – even light-hearted – topic.

This intellectual demonstrated how one can enjoy life to the full while treasuring the Christian values.

We are richer for having had this remarkable personality among us. He still guides us from paradise with his charming smile.
