The last few university exam results yet to be published will be finalised in the coming days, Education Minister Evarist Bartolo said.

Addressing a meeting with university student council KSU, Mr Bartolo said he was assured that the results would be published soon.

Second semester examination results were withheld as the result of an industrial dispute between the government and unions representing lecturers, Umasa and the MUT.

The two unions directed their members at the university and Junior College to withhold all non-final year undergraduate results and not to attend official meetings.

In a statement, the Opposition called for the results to be published as soon as possible, and said the government was trying to redeem itself for the fiasco by handing out smart card funds directly into student’s bank accounts.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, who also attended the meeting, held at Castille said the decision to change the smart card system was an obvious one as this would save the tax payer needless administrative expenses.

Describing the move as a symbolic gesture of trust, the PM said students did not need a big brother watching over how they use maintenance grants.

TALKS ON NEW PARKING SYSTEM FOR UNIVERSITY

He also said he would be having talks with the KSU about the introduction of a new parking system for the university.

The Labour Party had pledged in its electoral manifesto to build a parking complex for the university.

In March, a Transport Ministry spokeswoman had told Times of Malta that a proposal to transform an unused car park in Pembroke promised to help resolve the perennial problems facing university motorists.
