The House Business Committee yesterday set aside up to nine sittings for the debate on the opposition’s motion on the holding of a referendum on divorce.

The House will start discussing the motion this evening and will take up to March 16 before it takes a vote. Sittings will be held as usual on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesday evenings, except for the last sitting which will be held in the morning and culminate with a vote at 1 p.m.

The debate will not necessarily take up all earmarked sittings. If it does not, Parliament will move on to another item on the agenda. If, on the other hand, time seems to be short the House can meet again for a morning sitting on any other day before March 16.

Every member wishing to speak will be able to do so without the customary limit of 40 minutes, and the total time of debate will be shared equally between government and opposition.

The only sitting between today and March 16 that is not devoted to the opposition’s motion will be that of next Monday when the House will continue to debate the Restorative Justice Bill.
