The spring hunting referendum last April cost the Exchequer €5,981,226, including €1,349,538 paid to Air Malta to bring over Maltese voters living overseas.

In a statement to Finance Minister Edward Scicluna, tabled in Parliament yesterday, Chief Electoral Commissioner Joseph Church gave a breakdown of the other €4,631,688: remuneration to Electoral Office employees – €244,016; payment to assistant commissioners, etc – €953,545; payment to temporary personnel – €1,628,663; utilities, operating materials and supplies, repairs – €194,784; office services – €441,263; transport – €387,722; information services – €46,801; and contractual services, property improvement, hospitality and equipment – €734,894.
