An exhibition entitled The Schranz Family of Artists – A Journey of Rediscovery is currently being organised by Heritage Malta at Fort St Elmo, Valletta, until mid-July.
The exhibition, commemorating the bicentenary of the Schranz family’s arrival in Malta in July 1818, features around 190 paintings – the output of four generations of Schranzes – and explores their various art styles, techniques and entrepreneurship.
It also contextualises their paintings of Malta and of the many countries they travelled to and painted, framing them within the complexity of the turbulent times they lived and worked in.
The mentor behind the exhibition is John J. Schranz, a fifth-generation direct descendant of Anton Schranz through his first-born son, Giovanni.
Opening hours
• The exhibition is open daily at Fort St Elmo between 9am and 5pm, with the last admission at 4.30pm.
• From April 1 the fort will stay open to 6pm, with the last admission at 5.30pm.
