An appeal for humanitarian aid for immigrants who land in Malta was made at the General Assembly of the Council of Delegates and the 30th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement held in Geneva.

A total of 175 national societies and 152 states were present.

Frederick Fenech, president, and Joe Micallef, director general, represented the Malta Red Cross Society, while the Maltese government was represented by Ambassador Victor Camilleri and Christopher Mercieca from Malta's Geneva Permanent Mission to the UN.

During the conference, held last month, Prof. Fenech highlighted the problems Malta faced with illegal immigration over the last five years and the role of the Malta Red Cross in such a situation.

He appealed for help from donor societies in order to provide the necessary humanitarian support.

The historic highlight of the conference was the consensus reached on the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on Operational Agreements between David Adom of Israel and the Palestine Red Crescent Society. This agreement mainly consisted in the running of ambulances between the two societies which was approved by the general assembly.
