The Maltese love their bread and although it is no longer a staple, the purchase of the daily loaf is almost instinctive. This quasi-compulsive buying, however, leads to wastage.

While we recycle metals, plastics and paper (which is commendable) I notice that day-old remnants of loaves are thrown straight into the bin.

I am sure that if provisions are made for these weekly remnants to be collected in a separate plastic bag when plastics and paper are collected, some use may be made of them. Perhaps they can be changed into animal fodder. If such scraps are utilisable, then there is money to be made, too.
