The Customs Department has seized a record 64 million contraband cigarettes after an investigation.

The cigarettes were being shipped from Asia to mainland Europe in nine containers.  They were seized at Malta Freeport.

Documentation listed the containers as carrying furniture and toys.

The investigations were sparked by suspicions about the documentation of three of the containers.

Customs said it had calculated that the consignment involved €12 million in duties and taxes.

The containers were seized and the cigarettes are being destroyed.
