To further prove (if proof were needed), that restoring the Barry Opera House is legitimate, sensible and historical, I would like to refer those who are crying "fake" to the magnificent cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow, Russia, probably the largest Orthodox cathedral in the world.

It was Tsar Alexander I who signed a manifesto on Christmas Day, 1812, to build a cathedral in honour of Christ the Saviour to "signify our gratitude to Divine Providence for saving Russia from the doom that overshadowed her" when Napoleon was defeated and to act as a memorial to the sacrifices of the Russian people. Tchaikovsky's 1812 was premiered in it in 1882.

After the Revolution, Stalin decided to replace it with a monument to Socialism, supporting a gigantic sculpture of Lenin, perched on top of a dome. On December 5, 1931 this outstanding edifice was dynamited and reduced to rubble! But no funds became available for what would have been the largest building in the world! So, in order to do something with the gaping hole, it was transformed into a huge public swimming pool by Nikita Kruschev!

In February 1990, after the end of the Soviet rule, the Russian Orthodox Church received permission to reconstruct the cathedral in its original state and glory! It was consecrated on August 19, 2000.

Need I say more!
