Tarxien 2, Sliema 1

Sliema Wanderers’s poor start to the 2010-11 season continued this afternoon when they suffered an unexpected 2-1 defeat to Tarxien Rainbows at the Hibs Stadium.

The Rainbows made a flying start to the match as after only 10 minutes they forged ahead. Daniel Mariano Bueno raced clear on the right before sending a teasing cross towards Ricardo Costa who fired the ball past Anthony Curmi.

Sliema came back strongly and managed to draw level six minutes from the break when from a Jackson Lima free-kick, Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza beat his marker to slot the ball home.

The Wanderers remained the livelier side but it was Tarxien who struck again after 51 minutes. Sergio Pacheco De Oliveira won possession just outside the Sliema area and quickly sent a low cross towards Bueno who beat Szenpeteri from close in.

The Blues launched a stirring fightback which saw them hit the woodwork on three occasions through Mifsud Triganza, twice, and Victor Alhinho as the Rainbows somehow held on to a precious win.

Bueno was voted as the BOV Player of the Match.
