Tarxien Rainbows 1
St Andrews 1

\n

Promotion contenders Tarxien Rainbows were surprising held to a draw by modest St Andrews but still managed to retain their leadership in the standings.

The Saints threatened after just three minutes through a Dale Spiteri free-kick which went just wide of the far post with Aaron Guazzo going close for Tarxien.

The Rainbows broke the deadlock five minutes from the break when Simon Shead headed home an Igor Stefanovic cross, his 23rd goal of the campaign. Shead almost hit a second three minutes later but missed a sitter.

On resumption, St Andrews assumed the initiative and Brian Galea, Andrew Azzopardi and Jose Borg all missed good chances to level matters.

Shead missed his chance again but the Saints were finally rewarded for their efforts on 79 minutes when Borg headed home a Busuttil cross.

A minute from time, St Andrews goalkeeper Peter Said denied Tarxien from netting a late winner when he ably blocked Stefan Busuttil's shot.

San Gwann 0
Attard 1

Attard did a double on San Gwann, who are now one point behind Tarxien. It was a disappointing performance for San Gwann, especially up front where they failed to penetrate a solid Attard rearguard.

Following the results of late, Attard are now with an outside chance for any of the two promotion berths. They created the first chances through Mariano Muscat and Alan Micallef who were both denied by Saints' keeper George Attard.

San Gwann pushed forward in numbers, however, going close through Karl Sciberras and Alan Spiteri. But in the 45th minute, it was Attard who broke the deadlock when Elton Cachia scored from a rebound after goalkeeper Attard had partially parried a Joe Casha header.

In the second half, San Gwann saw more of the ball but the Attard keeper was rarely tested. He was only called to action twice but on both occasions he saved well on attempts from Antonio Saliba and Chris Agius.

Zebbug Rangers 1
Vittoriosa Stars 1

Vittoriosa Stars continued to lose further ground in the promotion race after they were held by mid-table side Zebbug Rangers.

Vittoriosa are now in third place. They were the better team during the first period and were unlucky not to take the lead when Mark Ciantar's header hit the upright early on.

The woodwork came to the Rangers' rescue again on 31 minutes, this time following a shot from the distance by Tony Cachia.

However, five minutes later Ciantar nodded home a Robert Adami cross and the Stars were deservedly in the lead.

Zebbug dictated the run of play after the break and Vittoriosa goalie Franco Scicluna had to be at his best to stop shots from Malcolm Borg, Gordon Mallia and Carlo Leonardi.

However, Scicluna was finally beaten in the 88th minute when Leonardi headed in a Keith Farrugia cross. In added time, Vittoriosa almost won it but Pace effected a fine save on an Adami header.

Division Three

Ta' Xbiex 0
Pembroke Athleta 1

A Duncan Edwards goal was enough for Pembroke Athleta to hand Ta' Xbiex their 12 defeat so far as the seasiders will now have to seek re-election next season to compete in Division Three.

Pembroke immediately surged forward in attack and after 12 minutes Andre Cachia's header bounced off the crossbar.

Cachia was almost on target soon after and on 33 minutes Edwards missed a sitter.

Ta' Xbiex were hardly seen in attack but Pembroke had to wait until the 78th minute to score a merited winner thanks to an Edwards goal after a fine solo move.

Referee: Clayton Pisani.

Gudja United 2
Sta Lucija 0

This was Gudja's fifth victory of the season, their goals coming in the second half.

Sta Lucija produced the better football at first and in the 14th minute Duncan Bonello's shot hit the upright.

During the second period, Gudja ran the show by themselves and it was no surprise when on 67 minutes they took the lead with a James Spiteri goal.

Maurice Muscat was denied by the upright but nine minutes from time Louis Falzon sealed the points for Gudja with a superb goal from a free-kick.

Referee: Mark Spiteri.

Birzebbuga 1
Sirens 2

Birzebbuga's promotion aspirations suffered another blow as they were beaten by a more determined Sirens team who took only seven minutes to forge ahead when Richard Agius finished off a Gordon Chetcuti move.

In the 23rd minute, Birzebbuga goalkeeper Mifsud denied Sirens a second goal when he blocked a close-range shot by Maurice Busuttil.

Four minutes after the restart Birzebbuga were awarded a penalty for a foul on Patrick Cilia but Paul Camilleri completely missed his shot.

Chetcuti added more woes to Birzebbuga soon after after doubling Sirens' lead.

Neville Farrugia did pull one back for Birzebbuga three minutes later but Sirens held on for their fifth win from 13 outings.

Birzebbuga defender Daniel Cosaitis was sent off for retaliation in stoppage time.

Referee: Malcolm Spiteri.
