Second Division

Tarxien Rainbows 3
Zebbug Rangers 1

Tarxien Rainbows celebrated their Division Two championship win in style last weekend, beating Zebbug Rangers in their final league match of the season.

Tarxien's campaign, however, will not finish there as now they will aim for the double. They face Sirens in the KO final on Saturday at the Centenary Stadium.

The Rainbows dictated the run of play during the first half and after only four minutes Aaron Guazzo fired them in the lead.

Tarxien then went close through Massimo Schembri and an effort by Ludvic Bartolo just missed the target.

In the 28th minute, Tarxien increased their lead when Igor Stefanovic headed home a Schembri centre. Stefanovic had another goal disallowed for a foul on Rangers' 'keeper Martin Pace.

Tarxien maintained the initiative after the restart but gradually Zebbug staged a strong reaction only for Gordon Mallia to fluff an easy chance.

But it was Tarxien who increased their lead in the 78th minute when Jeffrey Zammit concluded some fine work by Shead.

Five minutes from time, Zebbug were awarded a penalty for a handling infringement inside the Tarxien box. Substitute Jamie Farrugia converted from the spot.

Vittoriosa Stars 2
Zurrieq 0

Two goals scored by Silvan Privitelli and Justin Camilleri were enough for Vittoriosa Stars to obtain the points they needed to force a promotion decider against San Gwann on Sunday.

Zurrieq had the better start and early on an effort from Mark Ciantar was well saved by Farrugia. The Reds were then unlucky when Luciene Scerri's drive hit the upright while Tony Cachia failed to score for the Stars from an inviting position.

Vittoriosa took the lead just before the break from an excellent goal scored by Privitelli.

Zurrieq's reaction produced three fine efforts from Philip Farrugia which were all saved by Cini but a minute from time Vittoriosa were awarded a penalty for a foul on Mark Ciantar. Camilleri made no mistake to seal the issue with a 2-0 win.

Referee: Clayton Pisani.

Dingli Swallows 1
San Gwann 4

San Gwann were also after a win to force a promotion play-off with Vittoriosa.

In the end, they finished deserved winners against Dingli Swallows with striker Mark Psaila notching a late brace after failing to convert a second-half penalty.

As expected, San Gwann dictated matters for long stretches but had to wait until the 40th minute to open the score when Mark Abela rolled the ball home after a fine solo move.

San Gwann increased their lead on the hour through Jonathan Sant following a perfect Cuschieri pass but two minutes later the Swallows reduced the arrears when Charlie Azzopardi scored from a free-kick.

The Saints had a good chance to regain their two-goal lead in the 78th minute but Psaila saw his penalty kick saved by Abela.

However, five minutes later the same Psaila made up for his error after hitting home from a Sciberras pass. At the death the same player rounded up the score with another goal for San Gwann.

Mellieha 5
Gzira United 0

Mellieha completed their league commitments on a good note as they trounced Gzira United, netting four second-half goals in the process.

Mellieha took the lead after just five minutes when Adrian Galea headed in a Mario Debono cross. Gzira were stunned but the northerners had to wait until the 62nd minute to double their lead thanks to a Wayne Borg St John goal.

Borg St John scored again 12 minutes from time as Debono added two further goals for a 5-0 final scoreline.

Referee: Alex Arena.

St Andrew's 0
Attard 0

This match brought the curtains down on the Second Division League.

St Andrew's showed the better football but missed a first-half penalty and lost the chance to finish with a win.

Just before the break, an Attard defender committed a handball infringement inside his box. The incident was spotted by the referee who ordered a penalty. From the spot, Alex Busuttil saw his shot hitting the upright.

The two teams had their chances to break the stalemate in the second half but the nearest team to grab all points were St Andrew's in added time when a David Busuttil header bounced off the bar.

Referee: Nicholas Debattista.
