Two major projects in Gozo over the past year were a new boys' secondary school and a new Radiology Department at Gozo General Hospital, Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono said today.

Speaking during a news conference on her ministry's work in the third year of this legislature, the minister said that several other projects continued to be implemented including a number co-financed by European funds.

The boys school meant an €8 million investment which was giving 750 students the opportunity to learn in spacious classes and well equipped modern laboraties.

This year, she said, would also see the completion of the school ground which would incorporate 240 parking spaces.

The Radiology Department started offering new services and those which used to be given were greatly improved.

The CT Scanning equipment was among the most modern and it strengthened services in Gozo while reducing pressure on Mater Dei.

Gozitan women were now also fully benefitting from the National Breast Screening Programme. Previously, this service was not available in Gozo.

The Radiology Department project, the minister said, was part of a bigger one which incorporated the restructuring of the second operations hall at the Gozo General Hospital.

Work on this hall had already started and it was expected that before the end of the year this hall would be in use strengthening the services given at the hospital.

The health sector in Gozo had also benefitted from a €1.5 million investment to strengthen the electronic system which would permit a link to Mater Dei and vice-versa.

The pharmacy of your choice scheme was also implemented to the benefit of 8,000 Gozitans.

The minister also spoke on infrastructural works and said that rehabilitation works on Villa Rundle were expected to be concluded by the end of the year.

She said that the Cittadella masterplan had been finalised. This would guide the use and management of the site and the coming months would see the continuation of the process which would lead to the implementation of some of the proposals made.
