A ship which arrived in Malta Freeport earlier this month carried a number of containers with radioactive material which had been shipped from Kazakhstan. The cargo had been declared to the authorities and were carried in terms of the IMO International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code.

Transport Minister Austin Gatt told Labour MP Joe M Sammut in reply to a parliamentary question that the containers were loaded on the container-ship, CMA CGM Magellan at Le Havre. The ship carried 5,788 containers including 30 classified as IMDG class 7 UN 2912 (radioactive material). The containers were approved by the Radiation Protection Board. They were not unloaded in Malta.

After leaving Malta, the ship headed for the Suez Canal, Khor Fakkan, Ġebel Ali, Ningbao and Shanghai.
