Rabat Ajax won last weekend's promotion decider against Balzan Youths to join San Ġwann in Division One next season. For the Magpies, striker Adam Smeir had a fine outing and scored two excellent goals from free-kicks.

Balzan held the initiative during the first period with Anthony Lagana going close after nine minutes. But, Rabat broke the deadlock on 22 minutes when Smeir curled a free-kick past the wall and into the net.

Balzan went close to scoring an equaliser through Antoine Sacco and Jerryton Agius. Rabat almost doubled their lead six minutes before the break when a lob by Keith Micallef was cleared by a defender with Balzan keeper Bonello out of his line.

Balzan increased the pressure after the break with Kurt Coleiro hitting just wide early on but on 65 minutes Smeir made it 2-0 from another free-kick.

Rabat keeper Azzopardi made fine saves to deny Agius and Beppe Pace as Rabat tried to wrap up the match by hitting back on the counter.

Balzan were reduced to ten players 13 minutes from time when Pace was sent off for a nasty foul on Paolo Ciantar.

In the 89th minute Alan Zahra rattled the Balzan crossbar and deep into stoppage time Ciantar rounded up a fine day for the Magpies with a third goal.

The Gozitans were cruising towards a 3-1 win in this championship decider against Żebbuġ Rangers when an incident broke out on 57 minutes, at the side occupied by the Rangers' supporters, and brought the match to an abrupt end.

Żebbuġ took the lead on 13 minutes when they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Errol Cachia. Gordon Mallia scored from the spot.

The Gozitans' reaction produced various efforts, including shots by Joseph Cefai and Mark Camilleri, all saved by Martin Pace. However, the latter was left helpless just before the break when Gozo turned the tide in their favour with goals from Anthony Portelli and Charles Hili.

A minute into the second period Gozo were awarded a penalty for a foul on Portelli who made it 3-1 from the spot.

The ref's decision was disputed by Rangers who had defender Angelo Borg sent off.

On 57 minutes, another Rangers player, Lawrence Vella, was also sent off for a second yellow card and this was followed by incidents on the stands.

Assistant referee Duncan Sultana was hit in the head by an object thrown from the Żebbuġ end. The match was abandoned and more trouble followed with the police having to intervene to control the situation.
