No serious traffic accidents were reported last night as thousands of people heralded the start of the New Year, but a 27-year-old man from Tarxien was admitted to hospital and certified to be in critical condition after consuming an unknown substance.

The man was given first aid when his Renault Megane crashed into a garage in Valley Road, Msida at about 1.15 a.m. but his condition then worsened becauseof the unknown substance.

The police were out in force to monitor the streets last night. Some people were fined for not wearing seat belts, driving while using the phone or for having faulty car lights, but only one tested positive in breathalyser tests.
