St Margaret College Verdala Queen’s Young Leader’s group, together with their founding teacher Martin Azzopardi, gathered together to conduct a study about breast cancer in honour of Pink October.

October is breast cancer awareness month, which sees an annual campaign commemorated worldwide to highlight the importance of breast cancer awareness, education and research. The campaign also raises funds for cancer research and prevention. To this end, the group conducted a study with the aim of highlighting preventative measures that can be taken.

Inspired by Queen Elizabeth II’s annual campaign, Queen’s Young Leaders group members Leon Buttigieg, Aidan Bugeja Matthew Megrahi and Jake Gatt delved into the topic, identifying common causes, genetic elements and treatment methods of breast cancer. Obesity and alcohol consumption increase the risk of developing the disease, the students found in their research, while small lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, keeping a Mediterranean diet and controlling weight could serve to mitigate some of those risks.
