A 53-year-old man died yesterday after the mechanical shovel he was operating toppled over in the mud at a quarry in Rabat. Sources said Carmel Falzon, from Żabbar, died trapped under water and mud after the vehicle fell into the quarry in the Santa Katarina area at around 3pm. The Civil Protection Department spent almost two hours trying to extract the man’s body from the vehicle as the area had to first be emptied of water. It was the victim's brother, the quarry owner, who raised the alarm.
