Quarry operators are being urged to update their permits to abide by more stringent environmental regulations related to better dust control and more effective waste acceptance and control measures.

Operators holding a permit under legal notice 128 of 1997 must renew it to comply with the latest environmental standards regulated under LN 337 of 2001, which supersedes that of 1997.

At present, 10 quarries in Malta and Gozo operate under the older legal notice LN 128 of 1997.

The planning authority is in the process of requesting inert waste landfills operating under permits issued under LN 128 of 1997 to apply for the renewal of their permit under LN 337 of 2001 should they wish to pursue infilling or recycling clean inert waste operations.

Operators have until April 15 to apply but if no applications are received by then, the planning authority said it will consider operators to no longer be interested in the recycling or infilling of waste, and will revoke the permit issued under LN128 of 1997.
