MOSTA 1
Roberts 65
QORMI 3
Nilsson 2, Grech 90, Koli og 90+

Qormi scored twice in stoppage time to edge out Mosta in a thrilling match.

Straight from kick-off, the ball was played for Effiong who floated forward a brilliant ball to Nilsson. The Swedish striker eased past marker Tyrone Farrugia before cashing in from the angle.

Mosta started to push forward in a bid to get back into contention and Ryan Grech, back from suspension almost scored with a stupendous goal as his thumping drive from just outside the D, crashed against the bar.

Mosta were again left to rue their ill-luck four minutes from half-time. Rodriguez Ekani showed great composure to hit a rising shot but Matthew Farrugia, the Qormi goalkeeper proved equal to task pulling off a great stop to tip the shot in the direction of Zak Brincat who rose above his marker to give the illusion of goal as his header flashed against the side-netting.

Three minutes into the second half, Qormi went close to a second but Effiong concluded over the bar from the six-yard box. Borg then blocked Gustavo Villalobos’s close-range effort.

The growing feeling that Qormi risked punishment for their failure to convert supremacy into goals was vindicated on 65 minutes as Mosta equalised when Roberts let fly from distance and the ball arrowed past Farrugia into the top right corner.

Qormi must have felt the pressure but they found a way through the Mosta defence in the 90th minute. Villalobos initiated the move with a charging run through the middle before switching the ball to Effiong on the left. The Nigerian-born striker ran past the back-tracking defence and squared to the unmarked Grech who prodded home.

The goal sent further confidence soaring through Miller’s side and rather than sit on their lead they went for a third goal to completely kill the game off. Again Effiong was the creator and this time he outpaced Dyson Falzon on the right flank before hitting a shot towards the goal but as Omar Borg dashed off his line, Ousman Koli slid in to clear the ball but he only managed to send it into his own net.
