QORMI-3, RABAT AJAX-1

Qormi scored three goals in the opening 17 minutes to ease past relegated side Rabat Ajax.

It was a one-sided match with Qormi in control for long spells and only the woodwork prevented them from running a tennis score in the second half.

With this win, Qormi have edged closer to securing their Premier League status as they moved on the 23-point mark.

This game was over as a contest inside the opening 20 minutes.

Qormi took the lead after five minutes through Jorginho whose shot was fumbled by Rabat Ajax goalkeeper Pavle Velimirovic after the Brazilian's initial header had come off the crossbar.

Velimirovic then denied Alfred Effiong. From the ensuing corner, Leighteon Grech rolled the ball to Roderick Bajada whose curling shot was met by Jorginho but his header was turned away by Velimirovic.

Qormi doubled their lead on 15 minutes, Triston Caruana finding the net with a perfectly-struck drive that gave Velimirovic no chance.

The score became 3-0 on 17 minutes thanks to Jonathan Bondin who fired home after good work by Bajada.

The rate of scoring chances dropped after Qormi's early burst but towards the end of the half, Qormi threatened to add to their lead but Effiong's strike was deflectred wid and, on the stroke of half-time, the Nigerian was thwarted by the Rabat goalkeeper.

Five minutes into the second half, Effiong was unlucky not to get his name among the scorers as his curling effort, after a surging run by Duncan Pisani.

Rabat narrowed the deficit on 54 minutes. Running on to a long ball from midfield, Carrillo Pendas shrugged off the hesitant Gianola and flicked the ball past Matthew Farrugia.

Effiong might have restored Qormi's three-goal lead but fired wide from point blank after receiving from substitute Lucas Cantoro.

On 66 minutes, the Rabat goalkeeper was prominent again with a fine save from Jorginho's drive.

Although Rabat raised their game, Qormi continued to create the better chances. Jorginho sent his shot over the bar 15 minutes from time.

Caruana then hit another brilliant drive but Velimirovic did well to palm the ball away for a corner. The woodwork came to Rabat's rescue as Cantoro's strike hit the base of the post. Grech was also denied by the post after sidestepping Velimirovic as Qormi pushed for a fourth goal.

The woodwork again frustrated Qormi as Cantoro's free-kick sailed against the crossbar.

Qormi forward Jorginho was named BOV player of the match.
