The final of this season’s Challenge Cup, between Qormi and Floriana Young Stars, was a tight affair which produced an exciting ending.

During normal time, Qormi pressed forward but Young Stars marshalled their forces brilliantly, using the counter-attack as their main weapon – a tactic which enabled them to create chances of their own.

Qormi finished on a high note as they forced several short corners towards the end of the match but could not find a winner and the game went into extra-time.

After a quiet first period of extra-time, Qormi again won two short corners but to no avail.

Penalty hits were taken. Qormi missed the first one and Young Stars squandered the fifth, thus sending the shoot-out into a sudden death situation.

It was still level after six attempts but while Qormi scored their seventh, Young Stars had theirs saved.

What had been a breathtaking finale went Qormi’s way 6-5, much to the delight of the winning team’s followers.

In the third/fourth place match, Rabat defeated Sliema Hotsticks 3-1. Rabat led 1-0 at half-time thanks to a Josef Antonelli effort. Charlot Antonelli doubled their lead in the 57th minute but the Hotsticks pulled one back a minute later through Simon Baldacchino.

In the 64th minute, Rabat were awarded a penalty and Charlot Antonelli converted to secure his team’s victory and third place in the Challenge Cup.
