The Qormi council is buying three electric bicycles with €27,000 it received from the government from a fund for capital projects.

The council, mayor Rosianne Cutajar said this morning, intends to use the bicycles for a project it wants to run with the private sector.

The bikes would be parked at the Qormi park and ride where three electric charging points would be installed for people to use to go to work in the locality instead of their car.

There would be a charge to use the bicycle but this would be established at a later stage.

A GPS would be installed on each of the bike for the council to be able to keep track of their whereabouts. The bikes would be available on a first come first served basis. More bicycles would be bought if the project is successful.

Through the same capital projects fund, the council also received another €25,000 which it will be using to install six Belisha beacons with zebra crossing for people to be able to cross the road safely at night.

The beacons will use led lamps.
