Graziella Fenech and Emma Marie Housley were run over while crossing the Mriehel bypass on August 21, 2005.

Their community, of around 300 people, have to cross the bypass to service their needs daily as the thoroughfare has cut them off from the rest of the town. They are not even serviced by public transport.

Mayor Jesmond Aquilina and the Qormi council held a news conference on site this afternoon to reiterate the point that the bridge the council has been requested since has not yet materialised although a planning permit had been issued more than a year ago.

As things stand, residents have to take an impractical detour to reach the centre of Qormi on foot. Soon after the accident, which had caused an outcry, speed cameras were installed along the bypass as well as signs telling drivers to watch their speed.

The issue, Mr Aquilina said, had also been raised in Parliament but to now avail.

The girls were run over by Ivan Cutajar, who was 23 years old at the time. Last year he was found guilty of causing the girls' death by not keeping "a proper look out" and exceeding the speed limit. He was given a two-year jail term suspended for four years and a €4,000 fine. The judgment angered the girls' relatives who criticised it as too lenient.
