Updated at 5pm with court report

Kenneth Bajada, 40, from Qormi, today admitted to trying to rob a bakery in his hometown using a small sword which was displayed in court.

His attempt was foiled by two workers who refused to comply with his orders.

The man, who was masked and armed with a knife, was overpowered and disarmed by two bakers after he entered the bakery on Triq l-Isqof Scicluna in Qormi shortly after midnight on Saturday.

The unemployed man told the court he had spent the whole day drinking, and he regretted his actions.

Police said the man tried to steal a cash register. The two bakery workers, who were working at the time, held the suspect until police arrived on the scene.

Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech requested a pre-sentencing report to be drawn up.

Inspector Kylie Borg prosecuted and Joe Ellis was legal aid.
