The sea between Ta’ Fra Ben and the Qawra Palace Hotel has been certified fit for swimming following a sewage overflow caused by a badly installed private wastewater connection last week.

The Environmental Health Directorate said the decision was taken “following repeated sampling of seawater carried out on a daily basis during the last days”.

The bay, which was closed to bathers on Thursday afternoon, was contaminated by sewage which overflowed from the road.

The authorities were alerted to the spill after waste was seen flowing past two boathouses into the sea.

Wastewater technicians found the blockage using remote closed-circuit television.
