The Qala council has urged the planning authority to say what steps it will be taking following a critical report by Mepa's audit officer on a planned development on the Qala ridge.

The development of a two-storey residential block in the area has been mired in controversy following the auditor's report, which had heavily criticised the approval of the project.

In a letter to the authority, a copy of which was sent to Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, the council said the auditor's report reinforced its view that the development would have a negative impact on the environment and on one of the most beautiful views on Gozo.

The council also called for talks on the Qala local plan, parts of which were changed without the council being informed, it said.

It insisted that Mepa should not hide behind the excuse that an appeal into the controversial building permit was pending.

The auditor, Joe Falzon, had pointed a finger at the local plan for the approval of an application to build apartments, a pool and underground parking space instead of a restaurant and also accused the Development Control Commission of not using its professional discretion in granting the permit.

The authority took exception to his comments, insisting he should never have investigated the matter given that an appeal on the case is still due to be heard.
