Workers digging a parcel of land in Attard were in for a surprise yesterday when they came across an ancient tomb "in remarkably good condition" even if it dates back over two millennia to the Punic period.

The rock-cut chamber contained at least three human skeletons, an amphora and a lamp.

The Superintendent for Cultural Heritage, Anthony Pace said the amphora dated back to the fourth century BC but tests had to be carried out to determine the age.

Mr Pace said: "The skeletons are in good shape. Good data should come out of them. We're very happy about the find."

The plan was to protect the chamber and then excavate it, Mr Pace said, adding that, since the area was a public garden, the idea was to make it accessible to the public.

Attard vice-mayor Stefan Cordina said he was pleased with the find but hoped that works on the playground and open-air gym planned for the area would not be delayed unduly.
