The Malta Weightlifting Association organised its final competition in preparation of the forthcoming international events.

The competition attracted the participation of four clubs, namely, Cottonera Sports Centre, MCAST Naxxar, Nobel club Sliema and Starmax club Marsa.

Six national records were set with Rodmar Pulis and Nicole Gatt again drawing much of the attention.

In the youth section, Pulis impressed as he set four new marks. With a Clean & Jerk of 111kg and total of 193kg, he succeeded in setting a new national best not only in the youth category but also in the juniors division.

The other two national records were established by Gatt. With a Clean & Jerk of 40kg, she set a new mark in both youth and junior categories.

For Pulis and Gatt these results came at the right time, just ahead of their participation at the COJI competition, in Palermo, in May.

Pulis will also figure at an inter-national competition in Italy this weekend.

Other commendable results were achieved by Destiny Busuttil who managed a total of 60kg in the youths section. Ryan Agius failed to make a total but he still lifted 88kg in Clean & Jerk.

Newcomer, Chris Schinas finished with a total of 125kg as Matthew Muscat produced a creditable performance with a total of 210kg.

Noel Coleiro was best lifter of the competition with 240kg.

The competition was run by Jesmond Caruana, the Malta Weight-lifting Association president. He was assisted by three referees, Simon Brincat, Stephen Borg and Ramona Borg. Andrea Caruana was time-keeper.
