A public consultation process on the national strategy for education on sustainable development was launched this morning by the education and environment ministries.

Addressing a press conference, Education Minister Evarist Bartolo underlined the need for a society-wide approach when it comes to teaching sustainable development.

“There is no use just telling children about sustainable development then having policies that damage the environment, there is need for synergy…

“School and formal education can only do so much. There is the need for a society-wide approach,” Mr Bartolo said.

The education minister emphasised that the seeds for sustainable development need to be planted at an early stage.

Environment Minister Leo Brincat said the plan would succeed when it led to sustainable development on a local, national and international level.

He said there was a need for practical solutions not just idealistic ones.

A symposium aimed at explaining and initiative discussion about the strategy is being held at the University of Malta Valletta campus on Friday and Saturday.
