The current, real cost of a new grave is €8,000 and this will be reflected in amendments to the price order on the price of graves at the Addolorata Cemetery, Health Minister Joseph Cassar said in Parliament.

Replying to questions by Labour MP Stefan Buontempo, the minister explained that the price order currently sets a price of  €3,494.06. But the real price is €8,000 and this will be reflected in the price order when it is amended.

There are 4,069 applications for the purchase of graves, the oldest of which is 10 years old.

The minister said the extension of Addolorata Cemetery is still in its initial stage, with workers involved in site clearance.

PRIVATISATION

Asked whether there were any plans for the Addolorata to be privatised, the minister said the cemetery is currently administered by the government, but the government is considering other ways how the cemetery can be managed. Details will be given once they are finalised and all those involved will be informed when  the process is launched.

The minister also said the authorities haave not received any information about sensitive information having been leaked to funeral directors and therefore no action is being taken against anyone.
