Dar il-Kastellan located off Triq il-Kastellan in Żejtun immediately imparts a military feel in that it has a plain exterior, few small external apertures and corbels at roof possibly serving as machicolations (drop boxes).

In Mediaeval times the Kastellan was the keeper of the Castrum Maris (now known as St Angelo). The people of Żejtun were charged with garrisoning the Castrum Maris in times of need, hence it seems that the Kastellan had a house in this district. However, the Kastellan was not Maltese but mainly had a Siculo-Hispanic origin and resided in the Castrum Maris itself and probably the Żejtun house was a rural establishment owned by the Kastellan.

The property is somewhat socially significant in the area in view of the street being named after its original owner, however, the encroaching of new development has somewhat rescinded the context the dwelling originally had.

Mepa scheduled the Dar il-Kastellan as a Grade 1 national monument as per Government notice 1225 dated December 10, 2010.
