The Malta Maritime Authority is accepting proposals for the management and operation of two mooring areas in Xemxija and Salina Bay for a period of five years.

This would provide the extra capacity required to handle the higher demands for berthing spaces for boats longer than four metres in the peak summer zseason.

The operators chosen would have to invest in mooring infrastructure according to the MMA's requirements, along with providing berthing assistance and provision of supplies.

The MMA's CEO, Stanley Por-telli, said that the objective was to provide the right conditions and environment for the yachting industry to grow and prosper through the maximisation of coastal and land limitations.

"Through such arrangements, we should be in a better position to service both the local boating community as well as visiting yachtsmen and to establish the islands as a hub for temporary stopovers within this specific niche market."

The MMA said that a similar call for proposals would be issued for a temporary marina in Kalkara. The Royal Malta Yacht Club had submitted an application to develop a temporary marina in Ta' Xbiex as part of the new yacht club, it said.
