Healthy lifestyles and diabetes prevention and management were the two themes of the annual community event organised recently by the senior students of the Nutrition, Family and Consumer Studies (NFCS) office of the University's Faculty of Education.

This year the event involved two main activities: in the morning, fourth year home economics student-teachers worked hand-in-hand with youngsters suffering from diabetes to prepare healthy snacks and drinks.

In the evening, this healthy fare was served as an alternative to the usual appetisers, antipasti and drinks at a popular sports bar.

Both the chef and sports bar owner are keen on repeating the event in the future with different audiences. The idea is that these and similar healthy items will gradually become a regular feature on the sports bar's menu.

The event was a example of how university students can contribute to community development as part of their studies.

The NFCS runs bachelors and masters level courses focusing on teacher training in the areas of nutrition, health, family, consumer, textiles and sustainability.
