I would like to congratulate the young and promising Mona Lisa Camilleri for her achievements to date. Unfortunately very little publicity has been given to this athlete who started training seven years ago and decided to take up middle distance races. For the last three years she has been training under the guidance of coach Xandru Grech.

Ms Camilleri, 17, has represented Malta at various events including an international meeting at Crystal Palace, last year's Fisec games in Hungary and this year's games which were held in Malta.

In Hungary she won three silver medals in the 800 metres, 1,500 metres and 3,000 metre events. In this year's local championships she recorded a personal best of 2.22 minutes and 4.57 minutes in the 800 metres and 1,500 metres respectively and went on to win two gold medals.

This year's Fisec games saw her winning silver in the 3,000 metres with a personal best and a national record time of 10.51.44 minutes. She also qualified for the 800 metres and 1,500 metre finals.

She is furthering her training and experience this month in the United Kingdom by competing in two international competitions in Derby and Manchester.

To this young and loyal athlete I wish good luck and every success in future competitions.
