As a resident of Main Street in Birkirkara, I would like to question who was responsible for painting a yellow box on the road in front of a private garage late last month.

I became aware of this yellow box a day before the painting job was actually carried out, and on Friday morning I called the Birkirkara local council inquiring whether the news I overheard was true or not.

I was assured by the complaints official at the council that my information was incorrect and that the council only intended to paint yellow lines along the length of the said garage, and in fact I could hear her communicating with another official who assured the council's official that my information was incorrect.

Come Friday afternoon, that is the same day I raised my compliant, surprise surprise, there was the box freshly painted!

A job quickly carried out not-withstanding the complaint raised.

Apart from the fact that my information was correct while that of the official at the council was not, since when are garages being provided with yellow boxes? I was always under the impression that no parking is allowed in front of garages in use and the person garaging his vehicle is obliged to put a sticker on his garage door indicating that the garage is in use.

Therefore I see no reason whatsoever for painting yellow lines, even more so yellow boxes as in this case.

While on the subject, I also overheard that it would seem that pharmacies too are about to be granted yellow painted boxes in front of their outlets for loading and unloading purposes, although this seems to be a decision by ADT.

In this case, the garage aforementioned is located adjacent to a pharmacy, meaning that two parking lots will have been lost to residents in Main Street.

Now we all know that parking is a headache practically all around the island but when one considers that banks, lotto offices and several other entities enjoy privileged parking spaces, presumably as a security measure, the citizen is left with nothing but having to go round in circles until such time that one is lucky enough to find a parking slot.
