Sensory-impaired (visually and/or hearing impaired) and cognitive-impaired people often face considerable problems in accessing suitable educational and vocational opportunities.

This issue is being addressed by a project funded by the European Commission under the Leonardo da Vinci programme. The leading partner is the Royal National College for the Blind of the UK, one of the largest specialist colleges for visually impaired people in the world and which has considerable experience in European Life Long Learning Projects.

Future Focus, a Maltese company, together with other partners from Austria, Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey will use the Taking Tactile Technology (T3) hardware to produce lesson content materials in various languages for use by sensory-impaired and cognitive-impaired people.

With this project Future Focus plans to increase the training of Maltese sensory and cognitive-impaired persons and to increase tourism to Malta for such persons wishing to visit. In fact the theme of the development will be related to tourism in Malta.

The partners will receive training in the use of T3s. Each partner will then produce overlays for use with this technology. Future Focus will house the T3s which will then be used to increase learning and vocational opportunities in Malta.

The main impact envisaged would include the enhancing of self-esteem of such people and giving employment skills and social coherence for sensory and cognitive-impaired people.
