A 25-year-old man who overdosed on heroin the day he was released from prison was placed on probation for two years after he found guilty of drug possession and breaching a probation order.

Roderick Montesin, from Siggiewi, had overdosed on €10 worth of heroin he bought from Hamrun on November 15, 2011, hours after he was released from prison.

His sister had found him in his bedroom unconscious, purple and unable to breath properly. He was rushed to hospital and treated.

Handing down judgment, Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras said the probation officers report showed that he had had been clean since September 2012.

She placed him on probation for three years.
