The Housing Authority is to issue a request for proposals from the private sector on the provision of units for social housing.

Social Policy Minister Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca said the call will be issued tomorrow.

She said Malta has a shortage of social housing stock, and the private sector would be invited to submit proposals on how it could be involved in the provision of housing units.

She said the private sector could partner the Housing Authority in the building of housing units or the rehabilitation of existing private stock which would then be made available for social housing.

There are 3,300 applicants for social housing.

The call for proposals closes on February 21.
