A 46-year-old prisoner died late on Saturday night at Mater Dei Hospital after complaining of chest pains.

The man, who was serving a jail term for aggravated theft, informed the prison officers that he was in pain at around 9.15 p.m., the Corradino Correctional Facility said in a statement.

In turn, the officers informed the prison’s duty medical officer and called an ambulance.

The man was admitted to the intensive unit at Mater Dei Hospital but efforts to resuscitate him failed and he died at around 11 p.m., the prison said. His family and relatives were informed.

The case has been passed on the police and duty Magistrate Gabriella Vella is holding an inquiry.
