Maltese start-up Thought3D has developed Magigoo, a specifically designed 3D printing adhesive, to address the issues with first layer adhesion. The company has recently been awarded funds from the Takeoff seed fund award, which will enable Thought3D to finalise the development of Magigoo and market it across Europe. The 3D printing market is growing rapidly – it is estimated that it will exceed $21bn in worldwide revenue by 2020.

“Magigoo has been developed to help get the first layer of your 3D print to stick by exhibiting strong adhesive properties under 3D printing conditions,” said Keith Azzopardi, Thought3D co-founder. “It then releases with minimal effort once the print is complete and cools down. This allows even very delicate items to be printed first go, as the removal process is totally effortless.”

Thought3D is a 3D printing start-up company based in Malta, focusing on pushing forward additive manufacturing. Through advancements in 3D printing technology, Thought3D wants to empower today’s creators so that they can build tomorrow’s future. Thought3D is supported by Takeoff, the business incubation centre at the University of Malta.

Magigoo has been designed to be compatible with both poly (lactic acid) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, the two most commonly used 3D printing materials in fused filament fabrication 3D printing.

The monetary award granted through the Takeoff seed fund award will enable Thought3D to take Magigoo to market.

“We have an extremely talented in-house team and some excellent mentors and advisors without whom we would not have got this far,” said Edward Borg, co-founder of Thought3D. “The Takeoff seed fund award gives us that final helping hand to get us to the next step with professionally produced packaging and additional staff,” added Borg.

Magigoo is available at www.magigoo.com in packs of eight 50ml bottles. An eight-pack of Magigoo will last for over 800 prints. Currently an early adopters’ scheme is ongoing and anyone interested can contact the company to benefit from great discounts.

3D printing allows individuals to take a digital design or scan of an item and print it out in real life, layer upon layer. Magigoo opens up new possibilities by making 3D printing easier and more enjoyable.

According to Wohlers Report 2014, the worldwide 3D printing industry is expected to grow from $3.07bn in revenue in 2013 to $12.8bn by 2018, and exceed $21bn in worldwide revenue by 2020.
