The importance of heritage and the role of localities in Malta’s tourism product were stressed by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi during a visit to Palazzo Parisio this morning.

He praised the Palazzo, which now employed 55 people, and which has been expanding its operations over the past few months.

Following a painstaking restoration programme, the Palazzo has been restored to its original splendour and has now opened its doors to tourists and patrons throughout the day.

Dr Gonzi said this year has been positive for Malta’s tourism industry which saw a four per cent increase in arrivals and a 12 per cent increase in expenditure in the first four months.

Cruise liner passengers also registered a 53 per cent growth rate in the first five months indicating Malta’s potential in this sector.
